Introduction Letter
Dear Parents and Scouts,
Thank you for your interest in Boy Scout Troop 853 The goal of the Troop is to provide you with the greatest Scouting experience possible. This handbook is designed to answer questions you may have regarding Scouting in general and the program of Troop 853 specifically. We refer you to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Scout Handbook for further details on the Scouting Program. Covered in this handbook are the following:- Purpose of the Boy Scouts of America
- Troop 853's program
- Troop guidelines, policies, and procedures
- Funds, uniforms, and equipment needed for participation
- Merit badge guidelines
Scouting, as originally designed by Lord Baden- Powell, is aimed at helping youth develop in the areas of character, citizenship, and personal fitness As is demonstrated by the Scout Oath, there are three points to the Scouting Program: Duty to God and country, Duty to serve others, and Duty to your own personal growth The Scouting Program accomplishes these through an outdoor oriented program, and is based on the following:
- Scouting Ideals: Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout Motto and Slogan
- Patrol Method: working with others in a team
- Advancement: setting and achieving goals, and being recognized for attainment
- Adult Association: role models and fellowship
- Outdoor Program: self-reliance, environmental and wilderness awareness
- Leadership Development
- Personal Growth: intellectually, morally, physically, and spiritually
The strongest point of the Scouting Program is that development goals are achieved in a setting that youths and adults enjoy. Scouting is FUN! Many fantastic adventures await you, youth and parent alike Troop 853 invites and needs all parents to become involved in the Troop. Further, we need you to provide support and encouragement for your son on the scouting adventure. Scouting is a family program.
The Troop's youth leaders, adult leaders, and committee are always available to answer any questions you may have about Scouting and Troop 853. We encourage you to become a part of this great program.
